Looking for a new way to explore and experience the Missouri outdoors in the Ozarks and beyond? The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages children and adults to check out the free mobile game app, Agents of Discovery, while exploring the state’s natural areas.

“Using technology to make people more comfortable in nature is a cool way to reach different Missourians,” said MDC exhibits coordinator Susie Wachowski. “Users log into Agents of Discovery and solve challenges using their nature detective skills.”

Experience nature by completing “missions” while learning about Missouri’s forest, fish, and wildlife. Some of the active missions include:

  • Discovery Center Backyard Birds: Begin your mission at the bird feeder near the back exit of the building. Identify, learn and explore all the native birds you can find in our garden and yours!
  • Eagle Days: Why are there so many bald eagles in Missouri in the winter? Where do they live and what do they eat? Take up the challenges and find out! This mission can be played at home or at an Eagle Days event. Hurry, this mission leaves on February 28!
  • Twin Pines Ecosystem Adventure: Who Lives at Mule Camp Pond? What creature makes that noise? Complete the five challenges at the Twin Pines Conservation Education Center and uncover the mystery for yourself.

What type of pollinators are found in the state? How do bald eagles hunt their food? Discover the answers to these questions and more as you navigate Agents of Discovery.

“Complete nature-based challenges at home, by visiting an MDC nature or visitor center, or by attending MDC events, such as Eagle Days or the Missouri State Fair,” Wachowski said. “You can even launch the app and play mini-games to complete a mission.”

Once completed, users can claim rewards and challenges can be posted on social media using an MDC Instagram sticker or win small prizes at a nearby MDC Nature Center. The more missions you play, the more rewards you can earn!

“If you want to show off all your hard work, complete missions and share your achievements with MDC staff to receive prizes. You can earn Agent Oscar stickers, a custom button, or a pin for completing 1, 4, and 10 missions “, she said. “For this however, you need to create a profile on the Agents of Discovery app to show your progress and record completed missions.

Missions are updated frequently, “so there’s always a new way to play and learn about the great outdoors of Missouri,” she added.

To play Agents of Discovery without Wi-Fi or data connection, be sure to download the free app and create an agent profile, choose a mission in your area, and download the mission before you go. Then it’s up to you and your secret agent tools to find and unlock challenges!

Look for other MDC missions on:

  • Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center
  • Springfield Nature Center
  • Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center

While exploring nature, MDC recommends staying aware of your surroundings and always staying on the trail.

Agents of Discovery is available for download through the App Store for Apple products or Google Play for Android devices.

How Richie and Gemma McCaw prepare for a trip to the great outdoors.

Ahh the great Kiwi summer. When the weather is warm, we love dinners on the terrace, cricket matches in the garden and, of course, classic outdoor adventures with family and friends. Hitting the tracks and trails is one of the best ways to explore Aotearoa, but as the saying goes, “safety first”. And that’s where the new Plan My Walk app comes in.

Designed by the experts at the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council, the free Plan My Walk app is super easy to use, packed with practical information and helps you stay safe while out enjoying the scenery. With Plan My Walk, you can get the right kit sorted with the interactive gear list, make a simple travel plan, assign emergency contacts, and easily share your plans with others.

The app also offers trail ideas if you’re looking for some outdoor inspiration, trail-specific alerts if there’s anything to worry about, and weather forecasts to keep you up to date with conditions. Plus, you can personalize it with your daily schedule and travel notes, and leave reviews of trails, huts, and campsites to help others. It’s like a one-stop-shop for all things outdoor safety, and it’s the perfect tool for everyone from seasoned hikers to first-time adventurers.

Local legends Richie and Gemma McCaw are already fans of the app and use it every time they hit the trails in Aotearoa. For Richie McCaw, it’s about how simple precautions can really pay off when it comes to staying safe.

“Sometimes the health and safety side of going outside can turn some people off, but the app makes it a really easy thing to do,” he says.

“We’re privileged to have what we have here in New Zealand, but sometimes if you’re wrong it can be unforgiving, so it’s about saying, ‘This is something that will make it more enjoyable. and will keep you safe. “”

While Gemma McCaw is an avowed “impulsive” explorer, she knows the importance of good planning. For her, Plan My Walk gives certainty to all aspects of a trip.

“It’s great because it’s accessible to everyone, and you can use it regardless of your ability, while taking into account all these elements that you need to know. But it’s the security element that is the more importantly because it makes sure people come back to their loved ones,” she said.

“When people see pictures of us on social media on top of a mountain, a lot of them say they want to go do this but don’t know how, and so the app sets up the how to them, rather than just going out and aiming for the moon.

“Summer is a great time to get out there, try out the app, and do something new and exciting.”

"It is the security element that is most important, because it ensures that people come back to their loved ones," said Gemma McCaw.

PROVIDED

“It’s the security element that’s the most important, because it ensures that people come back to their loved ones,” explains Gemma McCaw.

And with Plan My Walk, you can be sure you’re getting the best information from those who really know their stuff. New Zealand Mountain Safety Council chief executive Mike Daisley said after their extensive research showed a worrying number of trampling incidents were preventable, the app was developed to take the guesswork out of planning a trip.

“It’s really easy to underestimate the importance of good planning and preparation, there are a lot of little things that can be overlooked,” he says.

“When combined, these small planning deviations can have a big impact on your safety. Conversely, it’s often the small details that go a long way to improving your safety.”

Apple shed light on the best developers on its platforms with the App Store price 2021, and the game was a huge part of it with people like “Toca’s world of life” taking the honor of iPhone app of the year and “Among us!” winner of the Trend of the Year award. Video games are so important that the medium has its own category of awards.

“In 2021, apps have played a more vital role in our lives than ever before,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a streaming announcement. “They have helped us keep moving forward in a year that has continued to challenge us in many ways, as a global community and in our own lives. The apps have helped us build deeper connections with each other, express our creativity, and engage with new people, experiences and cultures.

When it comes to games, these titles have won the biggest accolades:

IPhone Game of the Year: “League of Legends: Savage Rift” by Riot Games
IPad Game of the Year: “Marvel Future Revolution” by Netmarble Corporation
Mac Game of the Year:“Myst” cyan
Apple TV Game of the Year: “Space Marshals 3” by Pixelbite
Apple Arcade Game of the Year: “Fantastic” by Mistwalker

“Fantasian” took home Apple Arcade Game of the Year honors. It’s a Japanese RPG from the creator of “Final Fantasy”. (Apple)

“Fantasian” is the most notable project on the list for two reasons. The first is that it is directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the very influential “Final Fantasy” series. His work has shaped the genre as consoles have grown more powerful through generations, and its impact has been unmatched. This is why fans should pay attention to this game because it could be the last one.

“I approached this project as my last potential project and it is worth it,” he said.

The second reason why “Fantasian” stands out is that Sakaguchi took a different approach to its creation. The developer first worked with sprites and made the transition to polygons with “Final Fantasy VII”. For this Apple Arcade game, he went old school and used dioramas as part of the design to create the environments that would house computer-generated characters. It is a combination of analog and digital.

Sakaguchi said the dioramas reminded him to work with sprites. He said that in the days of CRT televisions, display technology made the job smoother as the game information was shown on the screen and the pictures mixed together. This contrasted with working with polygons, which looked more angular and sharper, he said. The process of using dioramas and making sets and props was more akin to working with sprites.

Looking at the game, “Fantasian” is indeed distinct and players can enjoy the work of over 150 different artists across 200 environments. The detail is so demanding that players can see the keys of a piano that has been made in miniature.

Recently, Sakaguchi’s studio, Mistwalker, released the second part of “Fantasian”. That essentially ends the game. He said there is another update coming in December, but the project is now what he envisioned, albeit with retuned bosses.

“I wanted the player to have the satisfaction of finally defeating the last boss,” he said. Even though players feel like “Fantasian” is more difficult towards the end, Sakaguchi said players should stick with it. “I encourage the players not to give up.

Apple App Store Prices Marvel Future Revolution
“Marvel Future Revolution” won the iPad Game of the Year award for Apple’s 2021 App Store Awards. (Apple)

NEW FAMILY FACES IN THE GAME
Another winner of an App Store Award was “Marvel Future Revolution,” a game that combines the appeal of the superhero genre with massive multiplayer online role-playing. Think about it, this is the comic book version of last year’s App Store winner “Genshin impact. “

In the game, players control one of eight heroes and take the protagonist through a campaign on Primary Earth. It is a planet that has crossed the Convergence where different universes merge in a central point. This is how players will encounter a diverse world with sections ruled by Hydra and a world where Tony Stark controls a city. Other areas are part of the universe where the Asgardians take refuge on Earth and, likewise, the Xandar survivors settle on the planet. It’s a diverse world to explore.

The appeal of “Marvel Future Revolution” is in its visuals which, of course, appear on the iPad, but its appeal is also in the idea that players can create their own superhero using the gear they get. during their adventures. Joe Lee, head of production at Netmarble, said players have 400 million customization options.

This number will increase as Netmarble adds Magik to the list of heroes. Like “Genshin Impact”, “Marvel Future Hero” is a game that is expected to grow and expand over time.

Apple App Store Awards Space Marshals 3
“Space Marshals 3” is a top-down action-adventure game from Pixelbite. It won the Apple TV Game of the Year award. (Apple)

TOP-DOWN TACTICS
While it might not be as well-known as the other award winners, “Space Marshals 3” is a title that deserves praise. Pixelbite’s Apple TV Game of the Year winner is the third entry in the top-down double-stick action series.

What makes this franchise different from its peers is the emphasis on stealth instead of non-stop shooting. Players control the protagonist, Burton, through several story-driven missions, in which he is often outnumbered, and players will have to sneak close to enemies or discreetly eliminate them by distracting them or hiding in the bushes.

It’s a more tactical approach, and one that looks great on the big screen. Co-founder Mattias Olsson said he was thrilled with the honor. “We are really excited,” he said. “We were completely surprised to be recognized for this. It’s really super.”
