Usually, when you watch a whole month of new shows on the horizon, it’s hard to put together some sort of thematic thread. These series come from a ton of different places, perspectives, genres and some from a whole different medium.

But there are more than a few coming in January that revolve around a returning person or group of people. Some are in mourning, some are trying to regain some stability from the past, some are redeeming their mistakes and some are just making a comeback to the screens after decades of absence. Without too much chair psychologization, it seems appropriate as we collectively enter into a whole new calendar year.

As usual, this monthly collection is made up of series from broadcast, cable and streaming. (Also, as tends to happen with mid-season premieres on network TV, a few of these shows will change their regular weekly timeslot once we are freed from the havoc that the NFL playoffs have. are on the regular schedule.) There are also a few shows settling into their first full seasons after a December preview. (We highlighted a few last month and, didn’t you know, at least one of them is pretty good!)

If this collection isn’t enough to fill your viewing schedule and you’re not quite ready to give up on 2021, check out all of our past roundups from February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September. , October, and November.
