Inspired by its inherently social user base, Hostelworld has created the Solo system, a number of features – including a mobile app – where customers can choose to interact with other travelers at different stages of their booking and during their trip.

According to a study by the online travel agency, 76% of its customers say meeting people is the deciding factor when booking a hostel and 77% revealed that they are looking for other travelers to do activities with.

Meanwhile, 30% say they are nervous about chatting with other people when staying in hostels.

Now, Hostelworld customers who opt into the Solo System service can see others who have booked the same hostel and destination as them at around the same time via the “See Who’s Going” feature, which is available at both on the Hostelworld website and on the app.

And, through the Solo system’s “Traveler Profiles” feature, customers can find out more about other customers, with public profiles showing their name, photo, nationality and places they’ve been.

The Solo System app is available for iOS and will launch for Android in April 2023. Hostelworld will soon be adding “LinkUps” to the Solo System experience, where guests can see which events and activities their travel companions are planning to try, or book and create their own events for their arrival at their destination.

The majority of Hostelworld audiences (83%) have taken at least one solo trip, while 24% have taken more than ten solo adventures. The Solo system was created to enhance the online experience for these customers, while encouraging real-life dating and friendships.
