HOUSTON — A group of teenagers harassed a man walking with a cane in North Houston on Monday night before a member of the sextet fired a single shot, fatally striking the man in the chest, police confirmed .

KHOU-TV obtained surveillance video of the confrontation from a nearby business on Tuesday.

Houston Police Department investigators said it appeared the man was walking behind a Walmart pulling luggage when four girls and two boys began harassing him.

Police said the teenagers were between 14 and 18 years old, and the man, who swung his cane at the group in an apparent attempt to disperse them, was 49, KHOU reported.

Surveillance video showed the teens physically attacking the man on the sidewalk before starting to walk away, KTRK-TV reported.

Investigators said one of the boys turned around and fired the fatal shot, KHOU reported.

Although the aftermath is not clearly visible in the video footage, the man collapsed behind a sign before several people ran to his aid, the television network reported.

Police say the teenagers were last seen running towards a bus stop and authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the man’s attackers.

Police confirmed to KHOU that the theft did not appear to have a motive, although none has been determined.

The man was pronounced dead at an area hospital, and it was not immediately clear if he was carrying the cane due to a disability, KTRK reported.

Conversations with Friends (Hulu, May 15)

Hulu’s adaptation of Sally Rooney’s book of the same name, Normal People, was a major hit, so it’s no surprise the service is branching out into Rooney’s back catalog with this adaptation of her debut novel.

Night Sky (May 20, Prime Video)

Amazon has a thing for old people who discover strange passages to strange places. JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek’s ‘Couple Finds a Door to Another Planet’ show Night Sky follows Josh Brolin’s ‘Cowboy Finds a Hole’ show Outer Range.

Upload’s plan combines Black Mirror and The Good Place to offer a lighthearted view of the virtual afterlife. In the near future, humans may be uploaded to a digital paradise, where they can still interact with the living. Even in death, computer programmer Nathan cannot escape his overbearing girlfriend. Meanwhile, he has help solving what could have been his own murder. A sometimes witty comedy set in an ever intriguing digital space.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1981)

Before the 2005 film starring Martin Freeman, Douglas Adams’ classic sci-fi comedy franchise brought this cult ’80s TV series. Making the most of visual trickery, the six-episode series successfully brought Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin on the small screen.

Humans may not be entirely original, but the assembled parts sing. A British family buys an artificially intelligent robot called a “synthesizer” to help them through their busy lives. This grounded approach to sentient and potentially dangerous robots is one of humans’ greatest strengths. At the center of the sweet: an innocent bond between the youngest daughter of the family and Anita, the elegant and efficient synth of Gemma Chan. A mystery draws the family into the origins of robots, which explore inescapable philosophical themes such as humanity, pain, memories and reality.

    Elizabeth Sisson

    Electric Dreams (2017-2018)

Electric Dreams is aptly named, each episode of the anthology series is a vibrant, polished product purring to the ideas of its source material: the works of Philip K. Dick. As with most anthologies, some episodes are better than others, but if you fancy telling stories with Black Mirror-like setups, let that reverie slip away.

    Amazon Studios

The Man in the High Castle (2015-2019)

The Man in the High Castle imagines an alternate history where the Axis powers (Rome-Berlin-Tokyo) win World War II. Based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, the series follows characters from the 1960s who live in a parallel universe, where Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan control the United States. But there are impossible news images surfacing of a world where Germany and Japan are losing the war, causing some to rebel. To really hammer home its dystopian credentials, The Man in the High Castle is helmed by producer Ridley Scott. Fully realized and with a focused plot, it’s gripping television.

The counterpart features JK Simmons playing against JK Simmons. Get excited about it for a second. Set in Germany during a Cold War, the sci-fi thriller follows a lowly office grunt discouraged by his dark life. Then one day he switches to work and meets, but a better version of a parallel world. Secrets, tense action and a masterful dual-role performance from Simmons make Counterpart a must watch.

    Tales from the Loop (2020—)

Not just another show about a small town where weird things happen, Tales from the Loop has layers beneath its beautiful surface. Based on a narrative art book by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, the series is beautiful to watch. Meticulous and symmetrical frames somehow give off a painterly feel. The interconnected city dwellers are equally nuanced, their stories exploring loneliness, aging, and the impact of technology.

    BBC America

In more ways than one, Orphan Black is Tatiana Maslany’s show. Before she becomes a household name thanks to Disney Plus’ upcoming She-Hulk, see her play no less than 14 characters in one series, including a hallucinated scorpion. Let that sink in for a second. Orphan Black weaves clever sci-fi concepts into a fast-paced, galloping thriller with more mystery and comedy in its stride. An essential sci-fi series exploring the debate between nature and nurture.

    Amazon Studios

Amazon rescued The Expanse from the realm of canceled television, bringing the series to six seasons. Thank goodness, because The Expanse is smart sci-fi with realistic characters, high production values, and a dark detective touch. In a future where humanity has colonized the solar system, a plot threatens to ignite a cold war between the greatest powers. A band of anti-heroes find themselves in the center. Expect more space western themes in the still excellent later seasons.

    Screenshot Amazon Studios/YouTube/CNET

Black Mirror comparisons are inevitable with this British tech series gone awry. Set in futuristic London, The Feed centers on an implant that allows people to livestream their lives without needing to press a button on a phone. No, absolutely nothing is wrong. An impressive cast includes David Thewlis and Michelle Fairley. While not as polished or deep as Black Mirror, The Feed is still worth a look.

May is finally here, which means anyone who hates the hot summer has reason enough to stay indoors and enjoy HBO Max’s new slate of movies and TV shows coming out on the platform in the new month. Waiting for a new episode of barry to deposit every Sunday or for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for release this week, dive into horror classics or a miniseries about a cynical, broken system.

Here are the best movies and TV shows to watch this weekend on HBO Max, including the third season of snowdrops and the nostalgic Benefits of being a wallflower.

Snowpiercer Season 3 continues the long train ride

The third season of TNT snowdrops dropped on HBO Max this weekend after its bittersweet ending aired earlier this month. Based on Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 film of the same name and the 1982 French graphic novel, The Transperceneige by Jacques Lob snowdrops Season 3 continues the story of passengers on a train constantly circling the globe of a new Snowball Earth. snowdropsThemes of classicism and social injustice created a dynamic and inviting discussion reminiscent of the 2013-2016 era of dystopian storytelling.

Season 3 is full of love triangles, LGBTQ romances, and redeemable deeds from once irredeemable characters. While some wonder if the series should end after its fourth season, Season 3 perfectly sets up the story to continue on the endless train ride of civil wars and betrayals.

Don’t Watch The Blair Witch Project In The Dark

Best known for reviving the found footage technique that started a trend with paranormal activity and Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project is now available on HBO Max to stream. Upon its initial release in 1999, the creators behind the film were so dedicated to marketing it as a documentary assembled from lost footage that they created fake police reports and missing persons flyers of the actors, which IMDb even supported.

The Blair Witch Project follows three film students, Heather, Mike and Josh, who produce a documentary about the legendary Blair Witch. Even without the use of special effects or fantastical monsters that make up the majority of horror movies today, The Blair Witch Project is an effectively chilling film based on the thought of three college students getting lost in the woods with the unknown right at their heels.

We own this town is a hard reality to face

We own this town is one of April’s best new shows, with Jon Bernthal leading this brutal hit of a show. Thread writers David Simon and George Pelecanos return to Baltimore once again to tell the true story of the Baltimore Gun Trail Task Force collapsing due to its own corruption. In many ways, We own this town feels like a story in the universe of Threadwith thematic points and similar punches that are so heartbreaking to see.

The glue that holds this show together is Bernthal, who is known for playing devious characters such as Frank Castle/Punisher or Shane Walsh from The Walking Dead but brings an illuminating duality to its morally conflicted character. Sergeant de Bernthal. Wayne Jenkins is so easy to root for, but the character himself is convinced he’s the right guy for the job. With only one episode under the series wing, We own this town has already kept alive a sense of danger and corruption that most shows struggle to illuminate in a few seasons.

The perks of being a wallflower are both heartbreaking and heartwarming

On Sunday, May 1, HBO Max subscribers will be welcomed to dozens of new movies on the platform, with endless possibilities. Among the best is The perks of Being a Wallflowerwhich was a staple of Tumblr-era coming-of-age movies from 2012 to 2015, when Blame it on our stars still made people cry. Return when The perks of Being a Wallflower came out, it was everyone’s obsession because it was Emma Watson’s next big role after Harry Potterand Logan Lerman was making his mark as the first live-action Percy Jackson.

With Lerman, Watson and Ezra Miller (before they made some pretty regrettable and public mistakes), The perks of Being a Wallflower is based on the novel of the same name written by Stephen Chbosky – who also dramatically directed and wrote the film. The film tackles sensitive topics of post-traumatic stress disorder and isolation, but also acts as a heartwarming film about friendship and innocent love. Plus, Paul Rudd supports the cast as a high school English teacher, and an inclusion of Paul Rudd makes every movie or show that much better.

Made for Love Season 2 wonders what love really is

made for love is on the weirder side of HBO Max’s selection of TV shows, but it’s undeniably weird that it can’t be ignored. made for love is based on the novel of the same name by Alissa Nutting and stars Cristin Milioti as Hazel Green, the wife of billionaire tech CEO Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen). After being confined to a virtual reality complex known as the Hub – where she and Byron have lived since the first night they met – she escapes but is tracked by her husband through what he calls a “Made for Love” chip in his brain, informing him of all his emotions, whereabouts and senses.

The series also features a flashback in each episode depicting Hazel’s life before her escape, either to the Hub or before her encounter with Byron. Through these flashbacks and the current story, viewers learn more about Byron’s quirks and inventions that make the series even weirder. While it’s deeply unsettling to watch Byron’s obsession unfold as Hazel understands the danger she’s been forced into, it’s an addictive and charismatic staple.

It’s easy to become attached to the world and characters of a good story, to be so engrossed in a series that you never want it to end. TV shows are one of the many ways we can escape the real world and enjoy an adventure, mystery, or weird world. They offer entertainment, joy, catharsis and a beautiful connection to the art of storytelling.

While we all like to keep our favorite shows as long as we can, sometimes it’s best to just let them go as they please. Some shows are short and sweet with only a season or three, then some shows are over a decade long and dwindle in quality every year. Shows that pass their peak often do so because of audience demands. They sacrifice quality of writing and plot in order to satisfy viewers and usually kill their shows in the process. As much as we love to save our beloved shows, sometimes it’s best to let them end on good terms.

    VIDEO OF THE DAY

Here’s a look at the shows that delivered on their ending promise and those that struggled to keep the stories alive.

    Fleabag has retained its charm

One of the shows that ended at the right time was Flea bag, an incredibly well-written, award-winning show. The British series has received excellent reviews from critics and audience members alike, who have consistently raved about the quality of the show. It talks about heartbreak, dysfunctional family and complicated romantic feelings and gives the main character a nice healing arc. The best part is that the show does all of this in just two seasons. The writers wrapped everything up perfectly and wrapped up the story succinctly, despite viewers saying they would love to see more. But the show retained its quality and charm by ending exactly when it was supposed to.

Did Supernatural last too many seasons?

Supernatural is a show most notoriously known for seeming to never end. It started with a promising premise of two brothers searching for their missing father while continuing his work of rescuing people from monsters and the supernatural. Over the years it has grown in popularity, so much so that fans refused to see it die when it was supposed to end in Season 5 with the departure of the original showrunner. Instead, it went on to have 15 seasons and now has a prequel show in development by one of the main cast, Jensen Ackles.

Related: Best TV Sitcom Casts Of All Time, Ranked

As the show progressed, it saw a continuous decline in quality which led to fans laughing at the whole thing. Plot twists grew increasingly ridiculous, plot holes more prevalent, and character relationships left unsatisfying and incomplete (not to mention queer bait). Overall, the show sacrificed itself for the sake of a demanding audience and lost everything that made it so popular in the first place.

The good place has found its perfect ending

Then there is the wondrous and witty series The right place, featuring the ever-loved Kristen Bell. This series had the unique premise that follows afterlife characters for the right people, except the female lead, played by Bell, was confused for a woman of the same name and should have gone somewhere much worse. The show revolves around Bell’s internal struggle as she tries to come to terms with the weirdness of the afterlife she finds herself in, as well as the group of misfits she befriends.

The right place has charming and well-rounded characters, incredible plot twists, and interesting discussions of philosophy and morality. Audiences loved every aspect of the series. Even though the series was so beloved, it ended well after four clean seasons and retained everything that made it special.

The infamous final season of Scrubs

Finally, the series has one of the most hated final seasons of all. Despite the fact that Scrubs is considered one of the best medical shows, it has seen a steady decline over the seasons. The show was originally canceled after season 7 but picked up by another network to give it a final eighth season. The showrunner was happy with the opportunity to wrap up the storylines. But Scrubs had lasted a little longer than necessary, it still had to have a conclusive ending — at least, until it got a ninth season with an all-new cast.

This final season is one that makes audiences groan in agony to think about, and it pretty much ruins everything that’s been watched before. The show was popular enough that the networks wanted to keep it alive to satisfy audiences, but in doing so they lost all aspects of quality and writing.

Creators always want to appease an audience and entice viewers to watch. But at some point, it seems best to keep a streak succinct as planned or learn when to cut losses. Dragging a story too long for the sake of an audience does a show a disservice.

HBO’s first Norwegian series is an addictive sci-fi crime drama starring the weirdest detective couple you can imagine. Senior Detective Lars teams up with Alfhildr, a rookie from the Viking Age, to investigate the murder of a Stone Age woman. Oh, that’s right – the series is set in an Oslo where migrants, or “Beforeigners”, from the Viking Age and many more appear in the present day. An influential legacy show, Babylon 5 may have dated edges to the present day, but it would be blasphemy to ignore it on this list. Political intrigue, character studies, and the threat of war ensue.

    Falling Skies (2011-2015)

Starring executive producer Steven Spielberg, this post-apocalyptic sci-fi brings family drama to alien invasions. Five seasons introduce multiple alien races, space travel, and a satisfying final showdown.

If you were blown away by Russell T Davies’ It’s a Sin, Years and Years is a must. Believe everything you hear about Station Eleven. One of the best shows of 2021, the meditative dystopian thriller (that last descriptor can only apply to certain episodes) is prestige television that takes you on a journey to surprising, moving, and unique destinations. After two timelines, the main focus is on the brilliant heroine Kirsten (Mackenzie Davis), a woman who survived a world-destroying pandemic and now roams the remains with a theater troupe known as the Traveling Symphony. Created by Patrick Somerville, whose writing work on The Leftovers can be felt here, Station Eleven takes an optimistic look at the end of the world.

Raised by Wolves will satisfy those who want to spend a ground of time (nearly 10 hours) in a world brought to the screen with the help of Ridley Scott. Two androids, Mother and Father, attempt to establish an atheist human colony on a new planet, after a war with a religious order destroys Earth. But they soon discover that controlling the beliefs of humans is a tricky business. Directing the first two episodes, in addition to pulling the strings as executive producer, Scott sets up a provocative exploration of AI and religious beliefs. There’s blood, great performance and a powerful lead in Amanda Collin’s mother.

    HBO Max

Despite being 90% a superhero show, Peacemaker features visitors from another planet, so it lands on this list. The Suicide Squad spin-off series centers on the titular peace, an outrageous John Cena who explores where his catchphrase – “I cherish peace with all my heart. I don’t care how many men, women and children that I kill to get it” — comes from. Swearing, gory, and bouncing to a rock soundtrack, the James Gunn-penned series is a turbulent time with a surprising heart.

Sure, you better catch Snowpiercer, the 2013 sci-fi actor directed by Bong Joon-ho, but the TV adaptation offers some great gear. One of them is Jennifer Carpenter’s Melanie Cavill, the hospitality manager on the ever-moving luxury train that protects its passengers from the frozen wasteland the world has become. Yet this small part of humanity cannot escape the class struggles, the lower wagons heading towards revolution. An exceptional story that works on the big and small screen.

At this point, new fans might be hard to find when it comes to this long-running British show. But if you’re interested in diving into wildly inventive, genre-bending, barnstorming adventure, try Jodie Whittaker’s latest episodes. Whittaker takes the place of the Doctor, an alien adventurer who travels through time and space with a kind heart and an offbeat sense of humor. Serious fun.

Five seasons of this sci-fi procedural await you. Immerse yourself in parallel universes and alternate timelines with the Fringe Division, a team of agents tasked with investigating unexplained phenomena. After a lackluster first season, Fringe found its way, delivering inventive ideas and a stirring emotional core.

    HBO

Alice in Wonderland meets a lot of robots. The truly mind-bending sci-fi western might be spinning in complex circles by Season 3, but its exhilarating first season kicked down the barn door. Set in a violent and sinister amusement park, where wealthy guests can shoot, kill and rape the android hosts in various ways, the focus is on Dolores, a host who begins to become sentient. No, she’s not happy with the way she was treated. Addictive and challenging, Westworld asks you to figure out the pieces of its puzzle.

    Person of Interest (2011-2016)

This sci-fi crime drama, created by Jonathan Nolan, has earned a place among the best sci-fi TV shows of all time. The series centers around some of the Precog-esque technology used by the government to predict terrorist attacks. However, the machine can also warn of smaller, but still deadly crimes, and a splinter team of undercover investigators set out to help related persons of interest. Dealing with delicate issues such as the concept of “the greater good”, Person of Interest is a fascinating, spectacular and comprehensive espionage procedure.

Before streaming became the dominant way to binge-watch shows, episodic television had a more rigid schedule, with many series starting in September and ending around April.

For shows that have retained this format, spring is when executives decide which shows are renewed and which are cancelled. (Or until a reboot.)

Hollywood trade magazines like Deadline are eagerly following up on this information with a running list of shows that are safe for another season, on the verge of being canceled and gone for good.

A few shows filmed in and around the Lower Mainland may not be back.

Shows filmed in British Columbia that are not yet renewed for the 2022 season

    A million little things

This multi-layered series has a great cast and intersecting stories (like the much-loved It’s us, which is in its final season). Deadline reports that his chances of renewal are around 50-50.

    The 4400

This complex reboot mixes science fiction and mystery. When 4,400 people disappear via a light beam and are dropped off at the foot of a mountain, a cascade of strange events follows their rescue.

    Charm

Another reboot on the CW roster is Charm, which is in its fourth season and often tours New Westminster. Given its streaming potential, it has a strong chance of returning.

    Legends of tomorrow

This DC Comic show ran for seven seasons. Will there be a lucky number eight? To be determined.

    batman

After the first season, this series underwent a major cast change when star Ruby Rose left and was replaced by Javicia Leslie. There has been a major drop in ratings, but there is still a chance that this series will return.

    Noemie

While most superhero characters have long comic book histories, this unique and more recent origin story was written in 2019 and adapted for television by Ava DuVernay. It centers on a bright teenage girl (Naomi) who runs a Superman fan site and gets pulled into the action when something mysterious happens in her Oregon town.

Shows filmed in British Columbia that are renewed for 2022

    Riverdale

Hoping to catch a glimpse of Cole Sprouse at Starbucks? There is still time as Riverdale has been renewed for a seventh season. So far, there has been a serial killer, a cult, aliens, and a time jump that has bridged the gap between the age of the characters and the actors. No one knows where season seven will go.

    the flash

True to its name, The Flash seems to be everywhere in Vancouver, and it’s not uncommon to stumble upon a film set down the street.

    Kung Fu

Vancouver replaces San Francisco in this series and Chinatown landmarks (like the Chinese Cultural Center Museum) and storefronts and restaurants like Gain Wah (on Keefer) are featured. The series is also filming at a studio in Langley.

    Nancy Drew

This series is set in Horseshoe Bay, Maine and often films in Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver. It differs from the book series in that this college-aged Nancy deals with supernatural mysteries and is not a high school crime-solving detective.

    Superman and Lois

A suburban take on the superhero and his super-journalist wife as they navigate the realities of modern parenthood won rave reviews for its first season and is already filming season two.
