I can’t go back, can I?

Everyone loves a good choice-based game. They are simple, but often very effective in allowing us to interact with the game world in a more substantial way. Of course, they also present a pretty tough design challenge, as copywriters need to make sure players know what they’re getting into with just a few words, often referred to as preview text.

Text preview is obviously a necessity, as there is no way to fit all the text you need into a tiny little button that the player can press, but it can sometimes cause problems for the player. Short lines with easy-to-deliver messages are a cinch, but what do you do when the going gets tough? This is exactly the problem I encountered when I first wrote a choice-based game.

It’s not something that you really tend to notice when playing it, but there are tons of different ways the games try to convey their message by using preview text for a choice. Games will telegraph you in different ways with glimpses of exactly what you’re going to say or do, with mixed results. Some games will do their best to make the sample text verbatim what the player character is going to say, but this can be difficult with longer lines or more emotionally complex.

Without beef is a good example of this – for the most part you say exactly what is written in the speech bubbles that you can choose from, give or take a word from, then if there is more to expand on, Alex will continue to say the line. Personally I think Nightschool did a terrific job telegraphing exactly what you meant when you said it in Without beef, so I had very few moments of frustration regarding the dialogue choices.

Then there’s the method of using different wording in the preview, but in a way that accurately sums up what the character will say. It’s more of a feeling, if you will. Mass Effect use this technique most often, and while it generally works well, I remember a few times when I chose a certain line, only to get a slightly different meaning in real dialogue. A particularly scary moment happened when I thought I was just being polite to Kaidan, only to turn it into a flirtation. I like you, Kaidan, but not like this.

Preview text based on choices in Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series

The last method is the easiest, but can work just as well – basically you’re just describing the function of what the player is going to say, rather than the actual words they are going to say, such as “agree with him” , “spare her feelings” or “tell her the truth.” This technique was typically used in older text-based adventure games, but it can sometimes be seen mixed with newer games, depending on the situation. If I had to guess , I would think it’s out of fashion because it’s less immersive to play.

Considering this is an easy problem to run into when developers write hundreds of pages of dialogue, there are inevitably times when the preview text doesn’t convey what you’re actually going to do or say with a any level of precision. These moments can range from frustrating to downright hilarious – one of the most classic examples comes from a Wolf among us choice that reads “[Glass him]. “Personally, I picked this one on my first game without seeing any of the memes because I thought it meant Bigby would applaud the Woodsman or something, but I got the shock of my life instead. when Bigby smashed his glass on that poor man’s head.

Another well-known (and beloved) example comes from Mass Effect, during a tense but otherwise civil conversation with the salaried scientist Chorban. One of the choices available to the player during the conversation is simply “[sigh]”And if he’s chosen, Shepard actually says“ I should kill you two idiots. ” Wait what? While the Wolf among us scenario is an example of text that imperfectly described its meaning, part of me wonders if it was just an error that somehow got into the game, because this reaction is so different from what it should be.

These are really funny scenes in retrospect, but at the moment it can be boring to have a result so different from the choice you chose. I mean by hell there are many lists out there describing how ridiculous these scenarios can be.

One of the reasons I love choice-based games so much is that they ask a very interesting writing question: how do you stay true to that character while still allowing the player to have so much autonomy? as possible ? The closest thing I can think of to this idea is improv theater, where actors make it up as they go, but also have to stay in character as best they can. Ah, I love when games and drama overlap!

If you love to write and have never tried writing a branched screenplay before, I highly recommend trying it with programs like Twine or Ink as it’s a great way to stretch those creative muscles. .

If you hear the term “adventure games,” you might think of video games like Tomb Raider and Uncharted; but these do not fit into the genre of adventure games. Or maybe it’s reminiscent of the pixelated point-and-clicks of oldies like Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle; they are certainly adventure games, but the genre is much broader.

So what exactly are adventure games? How has the genre developed over the years and what is its future? We are going to tell you everything you need to know about adventure games.

The definition of adventure games

In a way, it’s hard to define a definition of an adventure game. You might get something different from everyone you ask for.

As such, it helps to first understand what an adventure game is not.

The adventure genre means something different in other mediums, something captivating and thrilling. Peter Pan is an adventure book and Indiana Jones is an adventure movie, but the elements that make up those stories don’t necessarily make up an adventure game.

According to LiteraryTerms.net, adventures are defined as “a remarkable or unexpected trip, experience or event in which a person participates by chance”.

“Additionally, adventures generally include dangerous situations, short escapes, problems to be solved with intelligence and skill, exotic people and places, and courageous deeds.”

Many adventure games are about unexpected trips that happen by chance, but that’s not the heart of what makes them so. Additionally, while problem solving is central, the pace is often slow. As such, while the literary definition of adventure is subject-based, the definition of play is based on game mechanics.

A strong definition of adventure games comes from Adventure Gamers, which boils down to games that “focus on solving puzzles in a narrative setting, usually with little or no action elements.”

This means that games like Tomb Raider and Uncharted are not adventure games. Although they contain puzzle solving, they are mostly action experiences. Likewise, games like Tetris and Candy Crush are very confusing, but they lack a narrative frame.

The history of adventure games

The first adventure game ever to be released was Colossal Cave Adventure in 1976. In fact, it is considered the first example of interactive fiction.

The game was developed by Will Crowther, who combined his caving hobby with his love of fantasy.

This is where the textual adventure was born, followed by Adventureland and Zork. The story was told only through onscreen text, which the player could interact with by typing in simple commands like “go north” and “get the key”.

In the 1980s, visual adventures were born. The first was Sierra On-Line’s Mystery House, which still required text entry but featured vector graphics.

In fact, this point-and-click style continues to be the backbone of many modern adventure games. Although the interface has been refined, often removing the verb picker in favor of a single click, Broken Age in 2014 and Thimbleweed Park in 2017 both found large audiences.

But let’s go back. As the ’90s progressed and technology continued to improve, adventure games saw the addition of luxuries like voice acting, while others experimented with interactive video (called FMV). .

Some have ventured into 3D gameplay. Released in 1993, Myst has grown into one of the biggest and best-selling video games of all time. The game had a looser narrative and favored first-person exploration and puzzle solving, which 2016’s The Witness was heavily inspired by.

Walking simulators, as they are sometimes pejoratively called, were also born out of the traditional adventure. It’s games like Gone Home and Firewatch, often presented from a first-person perspective, that promote a strong storytelling experience without puzzles or challenges.

There are also visual novels, which are very popular in Japan, although their belonging to the adventure genre is questionable. Successful localized examples include the Phoenix Wright and Zero Escape series.

As for those more traditional point-and-click adventures? Many of them have found new audiences through remasters and re-releases (often on mobile platforms), like Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, and Grim Fandango. Registration has started for the Kids Adventure Games 2014, the first race for kids ages 6-14 that features teams of two competing in mountain biking, hiking, ziplines, Tarzan swing, Slope-n-Slide giant, cargo nets, mud pits and more.

The race is scheduled for August 2, 2014 at Mammoth Mountain as part of an exciting new eight-race series, the Kids Adventure Games, taking place at locations across the country. The details of the event are as follows:

To adapt to different running abilities, younger or beginner runners will compete on a short course. Older runners will compete on a longer course with more difficult obstacles. The cost of the race is $ 120 per team of two until July 1st. After this date, the cost increases to $ 150 until registration ends on June 14 or until the race is complete.

Last year’s race at Vail sold out with a waiting list of 30 teams, so runners are encouraged to register early. Online registration is available at www.kidsadventuregames.con. The camps will provide runners with opportunities to learn and improve their skills on Friday August 1st.

Clinics include teamwork, race day preparation, rock climbing and mountain biking. Clinics were also fully booked at last year’s event, so early registration is encouraged. The cost of the clinics is $ 50 per child. Participants must register as a team. No incomplete registration will be accepted. All participants will receive a cool SWAG from the event sponsors.
