Adventures are among the oldest forms of storytelling that have existed in human culture. They allow people to feel the suspense of accomplishing a fantastic goal and finding hidden treasures. Over time, the company has been able to create video games that take adventurous stories and let people experience them for themselves.

RELATED: Video Game Franchises That Keep Getting Better

Adventure games allow players to undertake massive journeys and explore mysterious lands to complete grand quests. These games make players feel like they are unearthing hidden artifacts or saving the world from being consumed by evil. While there are several amazing and unique adventure video games out there, here are some of the best ones that you should definitely explore.

DUALSHOCKERS VIDEO OF THE DAY

ten Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has one of the best adventure stories we’ve seen in games. This is mainly because of the title’s hard-hitting narration. It feels like there’s constant movement in the narrative, and with each level change players have more to unlock. It’s no wonder then that the game is one of the best in the series.

The cinematic aspects of the game – like Nathan Drake jumping from building to building when a helicopter tries to kill him – are thrilling. Every moment of the game, players will be curious about what’s next. The game has a lot of linearity, but that gives its structure a strong narrative.

9 sea of thieves

Sea of Thieves lets players get out on the high seas and fulfill their pirate dreams. Players are free to explore the game as they see fit, as there are many different things to do in the game’s vast sea. Players can search for treasures which they can bring back to ports to get rewards. They can also hunt down bosses and take over forts.

The game tests players’ true nature by giving them the ability to steal other people’s boats and loot. Players can have random PvP interactions which adds to the adventurous nature of the game. all the hard work was for nothing.

8 Batman Arkham: Asylum

Batman Arkham: Asylum took the dungeon crawler genre and completely changed it with great combat and a superhero exterior. This game changed the model of what superhero games should be. This allowed players to explore what looked like a semi-open world map with many quests to complete.

RELATED: Best Video Game Sequels

The game has different locations based on the boss that resides in the area. Most of the time, Batman unlocks different items that he can use to overcome the different dangers he faces in these locations. Batman Arkham: Asylum mixes great combat sequences with missions where players must defeat enemies with stealth. It’s a game that isn’t the best in the series but deserves pride of place in sparking change in this genre.

seven The Rise of the Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider has several iconic moments. There is constant action appearing on screen and Lara Croft’s life is always at stake. The sequences are more phenomenal than ever, with many intense situations involving great escalating mechanics. There is also a lot in terms of exploration.

The base game is fun with an enjoyable story, but it excels in the side quests it offers to unique tombs for Lara to explore to unlock different items. The spirit of completion inside many players will be ignited as some collectibles are thoughtfully placed behind stunning tomb designs.

6 hollow knight

Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania that gives players plenty of options when it comes to adventure. The game can be very difficult to start, but as players learn the controls it makes the gameplay much more enjoyable. Players won’t get stuck too often as there are usually multiple paths they can explore.

RELATED: Best Survival Games

There are many challenges, but the gorgeous art style will keep players in awe. The distinct activities and customization of the game are worth it. Nothing about this game feels empty or uninspired as it has everything it needs to keep players hooked.

5 God of the war

God of War 2018 managed to create an adventure that took players to new worlds based on Norse mythology. The game wasn’t necessarily fully open world in the traditional sense, but it still gave off the feeling that it was. All of the levels felt massive and unique, mostly because Kratos was transported to different realms.

The story also felt like something that would be written in the era of Romanticism in history. It’s a true hero’s journey that shows character flaws and patterns that must be overcome, which manifest in mental and physical challenges for the player to overcome.

4 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild cleverly continues Zelda’s legacy. It introduced old gameplay dungeon mechanics and managed to add some survival elements without necessarily being too survival-focused. The game is adventure-focused and it manages to stay true to what it is while including some new components.

RELATED: The Most Interesting Weapons In Games

The game has an open world that players can tackle as they see fit. It is a game with many challenges to complete and areas that add to a player’s exploration experience. The boss battles are also gorgeous, and the scale of the game seems endless. It’s a journey that feels malleable to how the player wants to experience it.

3 terrariums

Terraria took the concept of a randomly generated sandbox and created a giant game around it. This game is beautiful because of the way it rewards and punishes players for exploring. Players need to discover different hidden areas in the game which will unlock new materials which will make them stronger.

The game will show the player their true difficulty when a player travels too far in the world or finds a biome they are not ready for. It will release enemies too powerful to defeat. However, it is through this that players learn to choose their battles.

2 The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth, with all its downloadable content, is a game full of mysteries waiting to be discovered. The game is a refreshing new adventure, with each playthrough giving players new options to discover new areas. When a player dies in this game, they die for good, not having to start anything at level one.

It is through death that players discover enemy attack patterns as well as what items suit them best as they traverse the game’s various levels. There is something hidden within each room that inspires exploration. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth might fool some with its 8-bit graphics, but it’s a game that stands neck and neck with some of the best games in the adventure genre.

1 Ring of Elden

Elden Ring takes all other adventure games and makes players wonder if they have ever really played an adventure before jumping into this game. It is because of the enormity that this game offers players . At first, the map looks huge, but as players explore, they realize that the huge map is even bigger than they initially expected, and it’s glorious.

The game pushes players to explore different areas. If the game gets too difficult, players can unravel one of the many mysteries offered by the game, which unlocks another area. Nothing has to be done in any particular order, and many of the items players obtain reveal more secrets.

Kids Adventure Games returned to Vail after a three-year absence, creating an outdoor playground in the village that was hard to miss on the busy weekend.

The games began Friday and continued through Sunday, and the hundreds of children who participated now know the Vail Valley intimately after fording the creek waters that shaped it.

Organizers Helene and Billy Mattison said they were excited to bring their mountain obstacle course back to Vail Village, a good sign for the Kids Adventure Games event tour as it begins a return to national status. The Kids Adventure Games offered a stripped-down tour last summer after being completely canceled during the 2020 pandemic.

The event started in Vail in 2009, co-founded by the Mattisons and produced in conjunction with the Vail Recreation District. A decade later, the Mattisons were hosting the event in nine locations across the country, finding host venues in other ski towns like Big Bear Lake and Mammoth Lakes in California or Park City in Utah. . Near his home in Vail, the Kids Adventure Games also hosted a Copper Mountain Once Upon a Time event.

Chris Dillmann/Vail Daily

After being canceled in 2020, however, last year the games only had two events in total, one in Fruita and one in Minturn, a variation of the home event in Vail.

Helene Mattison said it was good to know that Maloit Park in Minturn is able to host a good Kids Adventure Games event, but she was also happy to be back in Vail Village this year.

“It went really well,” she said. “We had 94 teams on Sunday, 126 on Saturday and 116 on Friday.”

These two-kid teams cycled on mountain bike trails, used a zipline traverse to cross water, jumped off a false cliff, slacked off on a mud pit, rode tubes and swam and ran through Gore Creek, scaled a rock climbing wall on Bridge Street in front of cheering crowds, raced a single-track trail on Vail Mountain, and slid down a steep body of water called the slope-n-slide, the signature feature of the Kids Adventure Games that takes place near the bottom of the iconic Pepi’s Face track on Vail Mountain.

Children use ropes to cross a creek during Children’s Adventure Games Sunday in Vail.
Chris Dillmann/Vail Daily

The event required a lot of cooperation with Vail Mountain, which was helpful in obliging, Mattison said. The event also requires the cooperation of the US Forest Service and the City of Vail.

Beth Pappas of the Vail Recreation District hosts the event every year and also recruits her mother to volunteer. Pappas’ job is to coordinate and schedule the workers; she said they try to reach 100 volunteers a day, and while they didn’t quite get there this year, they still managed to pull off the event.

“The town is a lot busier in the summer than it was when we started this event so there are a lot of diversions to stay out of the main corridors, it needs a lot more volunteers and marshals” , said Pappas.

At Maloit Park in Minturn last year, they were able to run the event using fewer volunteers, “but there really is something special about being in Vail Village and the energy that comes with it,” said Pappas said.

Teamwork helps two kids get over the wall at the start of Kids Adventure Games Sunday in Vail. The races took place all weekend in the village.
Chris Dillmann/Vail Daily

Pappas called as many people as she could think of for help, including the contestants themselves. On Sunday, after finishing class with the best time of the day, Red Hill Elementary School students Aberle Hyatt and Brynley Velez, both 9, took to the climbing wall to bring the tubes back to the entrance to Gore Creek.

The girls were part of a team called the Electric Dragons; they posted a quick time of 49 minutes, which was faster than most older boys’ and girls’ teams, organizer Billy Mattison said.

After learning from Brynley’s mother, Megan Velez (who learned from Pappas) that the event was a bit short on volunteers, the Electric Dragons crossed the finish line and then got to work helping out.

“And they worked all the time,” Megan Velez said.

Brynley said they were happy to do so.

“We love to cheer on all the kids,” Brynley said.

“For the last people, we ran with them for the rest of the course,” Aberle said.

Left to right, Eagle residents Will Nager, Jimmy Winn, Cutler Merlihan and Ollie Higbie. The boys competed in the 12-14 age division at the Kids Adventure Games before volunteering to help out on the course.
John LaConte/Vail Daily

Eagle locals Will Nager, Jimmy Winn, Cutler Merlihan and Ollie Higbie also volunteered after competing in the 12-14 division. But after the event was over, the good workers ended up getting paid for their services, they said, so it wasn’t real volunteering.

The longest-serving volunteers at the Kids Adventure Games are the Mattisons’ children, twins Liam and Scout, who are now 19. The idea of adventure games actually started with a birthday party for Liam and Scout in the Mattison’s backyard, which contained adventure racing features.

Scout said she has participated in every Kids Adventure Games competition, including every event across the country, first as a runner and then as a volunteer. Along with her partner Emma Reeder, they were known as the Cheetah Girls.

Kids sprint through mud at Kids Adventure Games Sunday in Vail. The competition featured several obstacle courses on the mountain and in the village of Vail.
Chris Dillmann/Vail Daily

Having visited all of the sites, “Vail is one of my favorites, because it’s so big and it’s so much fun,” she said.

Usually, in the middle of their Kids Adventure Games tours across the United States, the Mattisons would work until Labor Day, but this year, with only three events on the schedule, they’re happy to finish early.

Scout said she plans to take the fall semester away from the University of Oregon, where she is a sophomore, to visit Asia and Europe with her father.

A former adventure runner himself, Billy Mattison has visited many mountain ranges around the world and is excited to share some of that travel experience now with Scout, he said.

“We are planning to go to the Golden Eagle Festival in Mongolia,” he said.

This week on Extra Punctuation, Yahtzee dives into the choose-your-own video game genre and why games like The career are not as innovative as the developers think.

During slow publishing months, I usually go to Nick the editor at the beginning of the week and say “Whaddaya got?” and it will throw away all the revision codes it thinks I might use. Not so long ago, he launched As Dusk Falls, a new branching narrative game from Xbox Game Studios. And after a look, I felt a deep sadness. No, I don’t want to play Choose Your Own Adventure Books anymore. I already did The Quarry this year and I only did it to get rid of David Arquette’s horrible facial animation.

Have you noticed how every time one of those Choose Your Own Adventure book games comes out, whether it’s As Dusk Falls or a Supermassive game or something from David Cage, the marketing always tries to push the branching storytelling as a bold new revolutionary method of storytelling? Hoping, no doubt, that we will have forgotten the last twenty years of video game history. And I guess I’m exhausted by them now because I’m sick of repeating that it’s not a new kind of storytelling. It’s as old as…well, as old as choosing your own adventure books. But at least choose your adventure books which might actually take very different paths. In a video game, more often than not, the paths cannot stray too far from each other because they will all use the same locations and characters. Spending all that time developing assets that a significant percentage of parties won’t even see is simply not an efficient use of development time.

And what’s even the point? Do “interactive storytelling” which should logically be suitable for interactive media? Allow the player to feel like they’re directing the course of the story? Nobody ever asked that. Nobody’s ever watched Taxi Driver and said, ‘Well, that was a great movie, but I would have liked it even more if he had asked me right before the end if I wanted Travis to go shoot on the pimp’s house or if i had he instead went home and roughly masturbated. That would have killed the whole impact, wouldn’t it. Hookup path games have a similar problem to games Endingtron 3000. You know Endingtron 3000 is when a game has multiple endings, but it’s only decided by the very last thing you do.And the end result is a game that feels like it never ends. has no real ending as none of them have any impact while you can just go back and pick another one.The story of the branching path is basically written, a whole story with no impact.

And it doesn’t feel like the player is directing the course of the narrative because they usually can’t predict the outcomes of their decisions. It feels more like the game is holding back content and we’re going to have to replay it a few times to get our money’s worth. I’m okay with the plot choices if it’s part of an immersive sim or an RPG because it’s part of roleplaying and it’s often tied to the gameplay element you might decide to get upgrade X or upgrade Y as well as a story point, but when it’s an As Dusk Falls situation and there’s no gameplay other than the story, there’s no basis for me to base it on and it’s just an adventure book to choose from.

There have been plenty of great game stories that have given me the strong emotional reactions I crave, but I’m willing to say I can’t think of a single instance of a branching story achieving that. Subtitle? The good ending series is basically a completely separate plot from the bad ending series, it doesn’t matter. Silent Hill 2 and Spec Ops The Line have multiple endings, but all the emotional stuff happens before the branch, the endings just change how the protagonist moves forward. So, in conclusion, can we please wrap it up with the fucking choose your own adventure books. It’s way too much effort and it never pays off. And the big joke is that there are games that have achieved what those games are trying to achieve – which is an interactive narrative in which every player has a unique experience – with relatively little effort.

First example: XCOM. There have been individual soldiers in my playthroughs of XCOM games that I’ve grown more attached to than all of the characters in all of the Supermassive games combined. And the game does relatively little about its ending. It randomizes each soldier’s name, nationality, and appearance from a small group of options, and that’s about it. But you know what? It was enough for my brain to fill in the rest. So after surviving a few Mad Jock McTrousers missions, the Scottish demolitions expert becomes the apple of my eye, and everything he does takes on a new depth of meaning. He misses a shot, it’s because he abused the whiskey during the flight. He successfully brings back an alien corpse, he puts on the first dibs to make haggis from the remains of the autopsy. Uh. It’s okay, my grandfather was Scottish so I have the right to say all that.

It’s as if all the game had to do was click on the pilot light with the random elements it provided that ignited the gas burner of my emotions. And the more effort a game puts into the procedural character creation system, the more varieties of qualities and behavior types it puts, the better the payoff. A story is basically just the actions of certain characters. Thus, a procedural character creator IS a procedural story creator.

Look at the Nemesis system from the Shadow of Mordor games. This is probably the best example of what I’m talking about in the triple-A space. The actual scripted stories of these games I can take it or leave it. You’re a grizzled type of hero who generically smolders with suppressed rage, you have a ghost in your ass, and you hate things that are bad. And nothing significant can happen because it might spoil the plot of the Lord of the Rings movies. But everyone I spoke to who played these games came away with a different story to tell about what they did with the randomly generated orcs. All they had to do was fill the procedural system with as many different personalities and behaviors as they could imagine, complete it and trigger it and people were emotionally engaging with it ten times more than with the guy with a ghost his butt.

See, that’s what I mean by “interactive storytelling.” A branching plot is not interactive storytelling. They are just two standard non-interactive stories sitting next to each other. The one unique thing about video games that you need to understand is that ultimately they are an experience created through a combined effort between player and author, and that applies to the story as well. All the energy that goes into creating the different branches of a choose-your-own adventure game seems so out of place when I look at what games like Shadow of Mordor have achieved by putting less work into the story. . Let go of the reins a bit and let the player’s own imagination come to meet it halfway.

Oh, and since I know for 100% certainty that this is going to be brought up in the comments, I better acknowledge the next game lest I be accused of forgetting it: Dwarf Fortress. That was it.

Modern ‘AAA’ adventure games ask a lot of you. They often want 40+ hours of your time, an investment in complex game systems, an understanding of multi-game lore, or multiplayer capabilities. But sometimes all you want from a video game is a short, sweet trip that will leave lasting memories. A game that wraps you in a happy, self-contained story that never outlasts its welcome. This is where indie video games come in.

While the definition of “indie games” has become less clear lately, these are titles developed by smaller teams. They’re generally not as budget-driven or expectation-driven as AAA adventure games, which means they can explore more niche ideas and experiment with creativity. They can be weird and surreal, and dive deeper with more personal stories.

Xbox Game Pass has become an unlikely hub for these types of games, with plenty of weird, adorable, and beautiful indie adventure games available to everyone. If you’re already a subscriber and looking for your next heartfelt gaming journey, look no further than these excellent indie adventure games.

Tunic

Tunic is a beautiful indie adventure game that follows a cute fox on a journey through forests filled with intriguing puzzles and powerful enemies. The game is designed with The Legend of Zelda in mind, and its inspirations shine through in every facet of gameplay.

The game has an in-depth combat system and also encourages exploration, with players having few clues as to where they should head and what they should do to solve each puzzle in the game. is led to Tunic have its own puzzle-solving community – a community that should prove very useful if you get stuck at some point along the way.

garden story

garden story is a wholesome action role-playing game where you play as a young grape trying to protect his village from evil rot. As Tunic, it is also inspired by The Legend of Zelda series – but it relies more on a cartoonish, cutesy style that makes exploring an absolute joy at every turn.

As Concord (the Grape Hero), you’ll travel across a pastel-colored map, collect various weapons and tools, and take down enemies like the creepy Octopihi, using rolling and dodging to land the most effective attacks . NORCO

NORCO is a phenomenal point-and-click adventure that examines the widespread scars on American society – issues like slavery, murder, economic collapse and inequality. It’s quite a heavy game in that regard, but with an extremely engaging and confident narrative and a tendency towards magical realism, it’s an eye-opening adventure game that’s definitely worth your time.

Lily: NORCO Review – Refinery Eyes

Here’s what GamesHub reviewer Nicholas Kennedy had to say about the experience:

NORCO is a confrontational video game; a confident, biographical, and unnerving point-and-click narrative experience that feels more like something you inhale rather than play, with an effective cocktail of magical realism, societal grief, and underwhelming freshness.

Even though this title wasn’t on Xbox Game Pass, we wholeheartedly recommend it.

Bug Fables: The Eternal Sapling

insect fable game

Bug Fables: The Eternal Sapling is a colorful adventure that draws much inspiration from paper mario series. You play as three insect warriors on this journey: Vi, Kabbu, and Leif, all of whom have special combat and puzzle-solving abilities. Use their skills in tandem and you can conquer the region of Bugaria and its many deadly warriors.

The paper mario The simile is most apt for this game, not only because of the game’s cel-shaded art style, but also because it uses a similar hybrid combat system. It’s not just turn-based, you can also maximize the damage of your attacks by properly timing your button presses and performing frantic moves. Even if you’ve never played a classic paper marioyou will definitely enjoy this dense and delightful adventure game.

hollow knight

hollow knight, from Australian studio Team Cherry, is one of the most critically acclaimed indie adventure games on Xbox Game Pass – and for good reason. With fast-paced combat, incredible locations, and a supremely satisfying storytelling, hollow knight is a complete triumph. You owe it to yourself to give this game a try whether you think side-scrolling adventures are for you or not.

You can reach a point in hollow knight where the action becomes a bit too hard, and everything seems hopeless – but the joy of finally beating this a the boss makes the whole experience interesting. Plus, you get brilliant visuals and a gorgeous score along the way. Australia plays great games, and hollow knight is a fantastic example.

Speaking of great Australian games on Xbox Game Pass, The artistic escape is another one worth noting. In this crazy music-inspired adventure, you play as a young man named Francis Vendetti, a musician who struggles to escape the shadow of his famous uncle – all the while traversing a path filled with cool, neon-infused visuals and lots of spice.

Lily: The Artful Escape Review – A Sight and Sound to Behold

Here’s what GamesHub reviewer David Wildgoose had to say about the story:

‘A triumphant journey of transformation, The artistic escape is a joyful musical odyssey of self-discovery that sweeps you away with breathless enthusiasm and leaves you wide-eyed and grinning from ear to ear. It’s the story of someone coming to terms with who they are and realizing that it’s okay to dream of being someone else. Most of the time, though, it’s about how trash folk music is.

paradise killer

paradise killer is the kind of game we wish we could forget and play again. In this Vaporwave-inspired story, you play as a detective working to solve a futuristic murder on an island reputed to be paradise. But while this city’s facade is perfect, its cracks soon start to show – and they get deeper with every step you take.

Unlike other sandbox games, Forager actually has a story-driven end state, with players having to travel far and wide to defeat major bosses, collect certain artifacts, and complete a variety of unique quests.

The game is best described as a combination of The Legend of Zelda and Stardew Valley, with a bit of room for his own sense of personality in between. It’s a cute experience no matter what aspect of the game you choose to focus on, and having an end goal helps tie the whole adventure together.

  • Developer: Telltale Games, AdHoc Studio
  • Publisher: Telltale Games, Athlon Games

  • Released: 2023

When TellTale Games was in its original heyday (before it collapsed and had to be reborn), they were adapting some of the best properties around, including The Walking Dead and Batman. But it was The Wolf Among Us that many thought was fun, because it felt like a play that fit the style of storytelling they were looking for.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Fables line of comics, The Wolf Among Us stars The Big Bad Wolf, aka Bigby, as he watches over Fabletown as a sheriff. But in this town, happy endings don’t happen and darkness is everywhere.

The Wolf Among Us 2 takes place six months after the first game and will force Bigby to face all new threats.

#11 Cocoon

  • Developer: Geometric Interactive
  • Publisher: Annapurna Interactive
  • Platforms: PC, NS, XBO, X/S
  • Released: 2023

To be clear here, it’s not based on the 1980s movie of the same name. Just wanted to sort that out first.

But you should expect a rather unique adventure, as the person who helmed Cocoon is the same person who helped create Limbo and Inside, and anyone who played those games will know just how deep and dark those titles were.

In Cocoon, you play as an entity that must wear a special orb on its back, then literally jump to worlds within worlds in order to solve puzzles and unravel a cosmic mystery. There are a lot of entities and mysteries to uncover in this game, so be prepared.

The simulator is a mix of making drinks and helping people through conversations. Serve them the right drinks to warm their hearts and potentially change their lives!

#8 American Arcadia

American Arcadia
  • Developer: Out of the Blue Games
  • Publisher: Rawfury
  • Platforms: XBO, PS4, PC
  • Version: to be determined

To better compare it to something you might be familiar with, American Arcadia is a game that’s basically the video game version of The Truman Show. Because in this alternate version of the 70s world, you live in the city of Arcadia, which is the most watched city in the world.

And by “most watched,” we mean that its citizens are watched 24/7 and people don’t know about it. Also, if there is a “ratings drop” for some reason, people can die for it.

You play as two different characters trying to escape the reality they find themselves in, and you must do so through a variety of gameplay mechanics and “documentary-style” storytelling.

#7 The Last Night

  • Developer: Odd Tales
  • Publisher: Odd Tales
  • Platforms: PC, XBO
  • Version: to be determined

If you were to read the general synopsis of The Last Night, you might actually be depressed. Because it’s a game about a young man named Charlie who lives in a futuristic cyberpunk world where people are defined by “what they consume” because they almost literally don’t want any of the worst manners.

However, you are unable to participate in these “pleasures”, and your life only becomes more difficult and interesting, as you try to take control of your destiny.

Explore the world of The Last Night, build key relationships and interactions, and see how the world changes based on what you do. Can you find your reason for living?

#6 Season: A letter to the future

  • Developer: Scavengers Studio
  • Publisher: Scavengers Studio
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5
  • Version: to be determined

Season: A Letter to the Future is a very different game. Mainly because it’s a cycling adventure title mixed with mystery and wonder due to the fact that a “cataclysm” is coming, and you have to collect people’s memories and knowledge in order to understand the stories of this world .

Each person you meet will unlock a new story, a new memory, and share key moments in their life worth recording. The more you get, the more you learn about everyone and the world, as well as what’s to come…and why it all ends in the first place.

#5 Lorelei and the laser eyes

Lorelei and the laser eyes
  • Developer: Simogo
  • Publisher: Annapurna Interactive
  • Platforms: NS, PC
  • Released: 2023

Besides having one of the weirdest video game titles of all time (and yes, that means something gives all the games unique names over the years), Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a mystery wrapped in many other mysteries for you to solve…while trying to solve the mystery yourself.

The game’s dark “surreality” is going to throw you many different things for you to solve, including uncovering the true roles of the people you eat and how they all connect to the central mystery.

Will you be able to figure out how it all connects?

#4 Born From Dust

  • Developer: Red Thread Games
  • Publisher: Quantic Dream
  • Platforms: PC, X/S, PS5
  • Version: to be determined

If you’re up for something both different and colorful, then Dustborn is for you. Because this game is a story-driven title that will follow a band of misfits and outcasts who travel across a divided continent to transport a mysterious package from California to Nova Scotia.

Nothing wrong with that, is there? But there is a lot of depth in this title, and this “road trip” will open many paths that will show you the “power of words” and how much deeper your friends are than you think.

Each of you has special skills and abilities, and how you use them in the game is up to you. So take the journey, learn the truth about your crew, and see if it’s better on the other side.

#3 Quirks

Quirks
  • Developer: 11 Bit Studios
  • Publisher: 11 Bit Studios
  • Platforms: PC
  • Version: to be determined

This one is a bit of a mental journey… you have been warned. The Alters is about a man who crash-landed on a planet and is all alone. To try to survive a key event that happens to him, he must create alternate versions of himself to literally help himself. But surely it can’t be that simple… can it…?

This title is about exploring the binary decisions you make that will change your life and set you on a different path, then facing them and wondering if “this is the real you”, all wrapped up in a backdrop of science. -fiction that will annoy you if you are not careful…

#2 The Expanse: A Revealing Series

  • Developer: Deck Nine, Telltale Games
  • Publisher: Telltale Games
  • Platforms: PS4, XBO, PC
  • Version: to be determined

Fans of the hit TV series will be thrilled that The Expanse: A Telltale Series is coming and will help extend the series lore even further.

The title actually serves as a prequel to the series as you’ll be playing as Camina Drummer aboard the ship known as Artemis where things start to go wrong and it’s up to you to try and find a way to get out of the situation and understand “what to do with the truth”.

As usual with TellTale Titles, your choices will not only affect the outcome of conversations, but also what happens next in the story.

Action-adventure games, as the name suggests, combine elements of the action genre with many aspects of adventure games. Although more and more action-adventure games are taking an open-world approach, some titles take place either in a linear world or in instanced open areas.

With an overarching plot, multiple supporting characters, and well-thought-out character arcs, action-adventure games are some of the most popular titles among gamers.

Over the past two decades, there have been many action-adventure games. As gamers enter August 2022, replaying some of these older games may keep them busy while they wait for new releases. Here are 10 of the best action-adventure games worth replaying this month.

Note: This article reflects the opinion of the author.

10 action-adventure games players can try again in August

1) Tomb Raider (2013)

youtube cover

The Tomb Raider series desperately needed a resurgence at some point. She was eventually saved by a full reboot in 2013. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, the new action-adventure game, titled Tomb Raider, was an origin story by Lara Croft and tested a younger version of the protagonist.

The game sees Lara trapped on Yamatai Island with other shipwreck survivors. There, she must adapt to her surroundings and make difficult decisions as she must save her friends from the island’s native cult. Combining survival mechanics with action-adventure gameplay, the game was an instant hit.

Adopting a third-person perspective, the game allows the use of bows and arrows as well as different types of firearms. Environmental puzzles and problem solving play an important role in this title. As part of the main campaign, Lara has to take part in the occasional grave robbing.

2) Red Dead Redemption 2

youtube cover

One of the best titles in Rockstar Games’ catalog, Red Dead Redemption 2 is quite simply a masterpiece. Released in November 2018, the game features a well-written narrative that spans six chapters along with a prologue and epilogue, which keeps players engaged from start to finish.

Players take on the role of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw who is part of the Van der Linde gang. As the new age catches up with the old at the turn of the century in the late 1800s, they must find a new place at a time when the world is shedding relics of the past.

Gameplay takes on a third-person perspective with immersive shooter gameplay and gameplay mechanics that mimic real life. The dedication to realism in the action-adventure game has been critically acclaimed, not to mention its story, interesting characters, and realistic open world.

3) Control

youtube cover

Remedy Entertainment’s action-adventure title Control provided a rather unique experience in both story and gameplay. Over time, the game has seen a few updates and two full DLCs with new short campaigns, one of which even connects to Alan Wake.

The game begins with protagonist Jesse Faden entering New York’s oldest house, which is the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). Once inside, Jesse is soon embroiled in a much larger plot involving interdimensional entities, alternate planes of realities, and a mystery surrounding her and her missing younger brother.

Gameplay comes in the form of a third-person perspective that sees players wielding a gun-like weapon in conjunction with supernatural powers. With powers like telekinesis, levitation, and mind control, this action-adventure game is a fun experience for players who enjoy intense combat.

4) Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

youtube cover

Before Assassin’s Creed games branched out into the RPG genre, it was a series of stealth action-adventure games. With some of the best parkour moves in any game series, Assassin’s Creed is set in many historical settings.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s historical setting is the furthest back in time as it takes place in Victorian London at the end of the Industrial Revolution. The story revolves around twins Jacob and Evie Frye, the last remaining members of the Assassin’s Guild. After finding the city under Templar rule, the two must find a way to restore balance and continue the Creed’s mission.

Players can play as one of two twins in free mode. 19th century London is beautifully recreated in the game and players can explore several iconic sites such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.

5) Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

youtube cover

Respawn Entertainment pleased many star wars fans in 2019 with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. After a long wait, players were finally treated to a single-player focused Star Wars game that included great uses of the Force as well as a whole new approach to lightsaber combat.

As an action-adventure game, it had a very Metroidvania design for its open areas, which could be taken out and unlocked after acquiring new gadgets and abilities. Played from a third-person perspective, the game is very reminiscent of soullike titles, especially with its combat and rest points.

The story revolved around Cal Kestis, a former Jedi Padawan on the run from the Empire after Order 66. After an encounter with the Empire’s Inquisitors, Cal is forced to escape and is rescued by a group of people who seek to restore the Jedi Order. . Cal must come to terms with his past, his separation from the Force, and his reluctance to return to the role of Jedi.

6) Resident Evil 4

youtube cover

Perhaps the most popular game in the series, Resident Evil 4 was originally released on January 11, 2005. It was the first time this survival horror series entered the action game genre- adventure. Switching from fixed camera angles to a third-person perspective, RE4 had the best balance of action and horror of any game in the series.

The game’s events take place six years after Resident Evil 2 and follow Leon Kennedy as he makes his way to a remote European village. Sent there by the President of the United States, Leon must find and locate Ashley Graham. He must also unravel the mystery of why most of the villagers have been infected with a parasite.

With a more action-oriented experience, players will need to manage weapons and ammo to successfully keep infected villagers at bay as they make their way to the mysterious castle. Resident Evil 4 is getting a remake slated for 2023.

7) GTA5

youtube cover

The new GTA game is not out yet. So players looking for a fun experience in modern times can play GTA V again. Even nine years after its release, the action-adventure game is still popular and has seen several updates, especially the always enjoyable GTA Online.

The single-player campaign sees a narrative centered around three playable characters whose lives intersect early in the story. With common motivations, a desire to rise above their position and a propensity for chaos, the three protagonists decide to work together to achieve their goals.

The game balances a dramatic story with some of the best gameplay GTA has seen in years, making it one of the best action-adventure games out there. Rockstar Games has proven on more than one occasion that it can create excellent AAA games that constantly innovate and provide players with a unique experience.

8) Marvel’s Spider-Man

With Marvel’s Spider-Man coming to PC in August, PlayStation users can pick up this action-adventure game. As one of the best superhero games of all time, it offers an original yet authentic take on Spider-Man.

Set in its own standalone universe, Marvel’s Spider-Man is set eight years after Peter Parker is infected. The game sees Spider-Man take on a new threat emerging in Manhattan.

The action-adventure game features some of the best traversal mechanics in an open-world title, with web-slinging being the highlight. The combat is fun and complex, requiring some getting used to before players can fully embody Spider-Man’s abilities in battle.

9) Batman: Arkham Knight

Speaking of superhero games, another big contender is Batman: Arkham Knight. It was Rocksteady’s final game in their Arkham trilogy and effectively wrapped up the story of Batman in their universe. Released in 2015, it’s still a hugely enjoyable title for PC gamers to get into before moving on to Spider-Man when it launches on August 12th.

Set in the modern city of Gotham, the game’s plot centers around the villainous Scarecrow, who plans to release his fear toxin into the city on Halloween night. Batman must work with the GCPD to foil his nefarious plan, as Scarecrow enlists a private militia to take over the city.

Because this action-adventure title retains most of the basic qualities of previous games while improving them with small changes. Batman is faster and more agile, the combat system is fluid and dynamic, and players can use the Batmobile in the open world as a mode of travel as well as for attacking.

10) God of War (2018)

With a sequel on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to replay the events of God of War. Santa Monica Studios quietly rebooted the series with 2018’s game, keeping Kratos’ murderous ways in the past by taking the warrior to the northern Norse lands. Having settled into a new family, the protagonist mourns the death of his wife at the start of the game.

As is the norm in Kratos’ life, he can’t go on for too long without attracting some kind of divine attention. This eventually happens when a mysterious man shows up at his house and challenges him to a fight. From there begins an epic journey, with Kratos and Atreus trying to stay under the radar as they attempt to reach the realms highest peak to scatter the ashes of their beloved.

Going from hack and slash to action-adventure, this soft reboot changed things up with a camera on your shoulder. The combat is much more complex, with various aspects being gradually introduced to the player. Kratos is armed with a new weapon, the Leviathan Axe. However, players can access a more familiar weapon halfway through the story.
