Criminal life, for some reason, has always had a place in modern entertainment, whether it’s gangster movies, rap, or games like GTA. The franchise centers around the various criminal transactions of all kinds of criminals. From semi-retired elite thieves to notorious drug leaders, GTA has a whole range.

However, it is far from the only game franchise that allows players to live out their criminal fantasies in a virtual world, and with great success. GTA wasn’t the first on the scene to capitalize on the criminal genre in games, but it’s certainly the most popular.

If fans have had their fill of GTA 5 and want to try other games with similar themes and mechanics, then they don’t need to look any further than the games on this list.

Adventure and crime games comparable to GTA 5

  • Note: Not all games on the list will be open world.

Honorable mentions:

  • Max Payne (2002)
  • The saboteur
  • True crime
  • Battlefield Hardline

5) Kane and Lynch: the dead men

The game didn’t really have a good time in terms of sales and quickly fell through as a once promising project that couldn’t live up to the hype. Developed by the amazing folks at IO Interactive, the studio behind Hitman, Kane, and Lynch was quite a departure for the studio.

The players took control of Kane, an aging criminal with a checkered past, sent back to the brutal world of crime he intended to leave behind. The game is absolutely cynical to the bone and often to the detriment of the player’s enjoyment.

The game can get pretty dark pretty quickly in terms of story and tone, but players will find themselves completely engaged. Kane and Lynch are worth mentioning as one of the most overlooked games that isn’t as lacking in quality as some might think.

4) Mafia 2

Mafia 2 is not a game you can forget once the book is closed. The story, characters, and world of Mafia 2 simply stay with the player for a long time.

The game follows the life of Vito Scaletta as he is dispatched to Italy to fight in the war to avoid prison and returns home to find himself roped up in the Italian mob.

The story follows his rise through the ranks of the criminal brotherhood and eventually earns the trust of superiors. The game grows on the player from the word “go” and does not let go until the very end.

The Mafia 2 experience is one that will always be a special memory for every player who has completed the game.

3) Yakuza 0

Yakuza is not playing. He’s here to make a statement, and very strong, and he won’t apologize. The game is utterly shameless in its boisterous treatment of characters and story, as well as over-the-top dramatic style that never slows down throughout the story.

What’s absolutely great is that when moments of calm thinking are juxtaposed with noise, it makes them all the more impactful. Yakuza 0 is a game where players will scream in front of their TV with excitement, but also empathize with the tormented characters on the screen.

Yakuza 0 is a special game and deserves all the credit it has received.

2) sleeping dogs

Development for the game began under the name True Crime: Hong Kong, but United Front Games eventually decided that the franchise had little left to offer. Thus was born Sleeping Dogs, a fresh, martial arts-focused criminal action-adventure game with a gripping storyline and a pleasurable endless game loop.

The game explains the lack of guns with the higher restrictions on guns in Hong Kong. This is good since Wei Shen’s kicks are about the most dangerous weapons of mass destruction on the planet. The game’s tight combat loop never fails to impress as players take on wave after wave of enemies.

Sleeping Dogs has a lot of emotional depth, which is appreciated by fans of gripping action games.

1) Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2, instead of being a celebration of outlaw life, is, in many ways, a meditation on reluctance to change. The game begins at the very end of the Wild West, with our heroes faced with a calculation of epic proportions that their way of life has simply come to an end.

It forces the characters to make some interesting decisions, which makes for a hell of a story experience. Not invested in by its GTA counterpart, Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar’s most fascinating open world to date, with plenty of waiting for the player around every corner.

The game makes a poignant point on a lot of things, which are never too much on the nose. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an experience like no other and has its place among the best games to offer.
